Yamamoto Noh Theatre

Yamamoto Noh Theatre
Founded in Osaka in 1927 by master Hiroyuki Yamamoto, Yamamoto Noh Theatre is the oldest Noh theatre in the city and one of Japan’s most significant venues dedicated to this traditional performing art. Destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 1950, the theatre preserves the unique atmosphere of a historic Noh stage and has been registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan since 2006.
Rooted in a lineage connected to the classical schools of Noh theatre, Yamamoto Noh Theatre combines the preservation of cultural heritage with a strong commitment to contemporary audiences. Through performances, educational programmes, and international collaborations, it actively promotes Noh and Kyogen, theatrical forms with more than 700 years of history that have been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Renowned for its innovative outreach initiatives and its efforts to make Noh accessible to new generations of spectators, Yamamoto Noh Theatre has become an important cultural ambassador of Japan, presenting performances and projects worldwide while creating meaningful connections between tradition and contemporary artistic practice.
