When Laurent Gaudé emerged on the French theatre stage at the end of the last century, European playwriting had largely abandoned the mythological narratives that had once defined Western drama. Nevertheless, the young playwright, born in 1972, dared to resurrect ancient gods, forgotten heroes, and primordial stories, infusing them with a sense of urgency that speaks directly to our contemporary crises. More precisely, we are faced with a playwright who understands that myths are not relics, but living organisms that breathe in step with the anxieties and aspirations of each generation.
The six plays collected in this anthology offer a comprehensive portrait of the French playwright’s theatrical universe, a cosmos in which the boundaries between the ancient and the modern, the mythical and the political, the poetic and the brutal dissolve into a singular theatrical language. These works demonstrate why Laurent Gaudé received the Goncourt Prize in 2004 and why his theatre continues to resonate on stages across Europe, as the creator of a dramatic idiom that is simultaneously archaic and urgently contemporary, exuberant and devastating.
